<p>When the above stories are heard and digested, not only the story of Engelbart must seem incredible, but really the entire big thing: How can it be possible that we the people have ignored insights whose importance literally cannot be overstated? What is really going on? Perhaps there is something we need to understand about ourselves, something very basic, that we haven't seen before? It turns out – and isn't this what the large paradigm changes really are about – that the substance of the matter will be in an entirely different perception of the human condition, with entirely new issues... That is what The Paradigm Strategy poster aims to model, as one of our prototypes. It is most fascinating to observe how even most useful and natural ideas, when they challenge the prevailing paradigm, are ignored or resisted by even the best among us. Part of the story is about how Doug Engelbart's larger-than-life message, and "call to action" were outright ignored at the presentation of Doug at Google in 2007. And if you can read it between the lines, you'll in it yet another interesting story – showing the inability of the current leaders to allocate the time and attention needed for understanding the emerging paradigm; and pointing to a large opportunity for new, more courageous and more visionary leaders to take the lead.</p>

<p>We approach the genesis of a large, Renaissance-like change from a specific angle. Think about the invention of the printing press; it allowed knowledge to spread so much faster, that it is often considered to be <em>the</em> major contributing factor to the deep societal changes that follow. Or think about the steam engine; it not only powered the Industrial Revolution, but also served as a precursor to innumerable inventions that saved us work and effort. What ideas, and what inventions, may have a similar impact today?</p>
 
<p>We tell the stories of the [[giants|<em>giants</em>]] who made such ground-breaking insights. We then explain why the application of those insights will lead to comprehensive change.</p>

<div class="col-md-6"><h3>Of course it's the Web – <em>but</em>...</h3>
 
<p>Having decided, as a novice engineer in December of 1950, to direct his career so as to maximize its benefits to the mankind, [[Douglas Engelbart]] thought intensely about the best way to do that. After three months he had an epiphany.</p>
 
<p>On a convention of computer professionals in 1968  Engelbart and his SRI-based lab demonstrated the computer technology we are using today – computers linked together into a network, people interacting with computers via video terminals and a mouse and the windows, and through them with one another.</p>
 
<p>In the late 1990s the Silicon Valley found out that it was not Steve Jobs and Bill Gates who invented the technology, or even the XEROS Palo Alto Research Center from which they took it. Engelbart became a celebrity. He received all the imaginable honors that an inventor can get. And yet he made it obvious, and everyone around him knew, that he felt celebrated for a wrong reason; and that the gist of his vision had not yet been understood, or put to use.</p></div>

<p>In 2007, with his career coming to an end, Engelbart was honored one more time with a panel at Google, to give his last message to the world. Doug gave his slides the title "A Call to Action!". His his first slide – equipped with his photo to suggest that this was really his message to the world – read "Digital technology could help make this a better world. But we've also got to change our way of thinking." But during the panel the title slide and the three slides that followed – which explained the substance of his vision, and the deeper reason for the technology he invented – were not even shown!

<p>What is it that Engelbart saw, that he was unable to communicate? What is "the Web that wasn't" (to use XY's apt phrase)? What is the new thinking that could enable the digital technology to help make this a better world? What was Jantsch's unfinished revolution?</p>
 
<p>A detailed answer will be given in the book titled "Systemic Innovation" and subtitled "Democracy for the Third Millennium". While this book is being written, you may pick up the answer from the page we've created for him, and from the notes provided here at the bottom.</p>

<p>We asked our communication design team to create an ideogram that would show the people that they are part of a system. And that the structure of that system, or systems, <em>determines</em> both the quality of their life and the value .The ideogram shown on the right is what they came up with. So imagine a [[system|<em>system</em>]] as a large machine, comprising technology <em>and</em> people. Think of its role as taking everyone's daily work as input, and producing socially useful results as output. How well is it performing in this all-important task? How well is it suitable for that task? How much would its function improve by changing it?</p>
 
<p>Consider these questions for a moment, and the [[systemic innovation|<em>systemic innovation</em>]] proposal will begin to emerge in full clarity before your eyes.</p></div>

<div class="col-md-6"><p>"The answer is obvious – it's the Web!" we imagine you say. The idea that the Web is the new printing press is of course already widely present. And if that's all there is to the story, then it's all already there.  But there's a catch – and that's what we're about to point to. It is exactly by focusing on the difference of the Web that is, and of "the Web that wasn't" (as Alex Wright put it), that the future of not only the Web but also of innovation will be understood.</p>
 
 
 
 
<p>To point to this difference we focus on [[Douglas Engelbart]]. This is not only because he created the core ideas. Not only because he is the 'patron saint' of [[knowledge federation|<em>knowledge federation</em>]]. Not only because we are inspired by his vision, and because many of us considered him a dear friend. But this is also because his story reflects so well the idiosyncrasies of our present way of thinking and innovating. Doug was Silicon Valley's genius in residence - why was he not understood, or even heard, even after having been recognized as that?</p>
 
 
<p>So here's his story in a nutshell:

<div class="col-md-9"><p>Doug was celebrated as a brilliant creator of TECHNOLOGY – who created the technology we have in front of us (yes, it took some years for the people in Silicon Valley to understand that it was not Bill Gates and Steve Jobs... or even the XEROX PARC from which they got the interactive interface that made personal computing such a success – but that it was Doug Engelbart and his lab, who demonstrated this technology, and indeed more, already in 1968, when the humans communicated with computers through punched cards and line printer output.</p>
 
 
<p>But really we'll introduce Engelbart not as a technology inventor, but as a brilliant creator of IDEAS ; PRINCIPLES – of the kind that inform our creative action, specifically in technological innovation, but also BEYOND. How important are those ideas? We'll explain them and let you judge for yourself. Then perhaps you'll agree with us, that it is most remarkable that those principles SO MUCH DID NOT HAVE A PLACE IN OUR ACADEMIC AND PRACTICAL SCHEME OF THINGS THAT THEY REMAINED ENTIRELY IGNORED!!!! </p>
 
 
<p>Doug was credited for "The Mother of All Demos". We must, however, give him credit for seminal contributions to "The Mother of All Issues" – which is what our story is here.</p>
 
 
<p>How Doug decided to focus on this matter (the thinking of a young idealistic engineer, in Winter of 1951): The humanity has problems. Qualify their difficulty as complexity x urgency. This measure is increasing exponentially. But there's an obvious (to Doug) way to catch up and conquer these issues – namely to have our CAPABILITIES grow exponentially too. And the way to do that is to focus our capabilities on improve our capabilities (which, in systemic terms, introduces "positive feedback" which is known to lead to exponential growth). QED...</p>
 
 
<p>Of Engelbart's many contributions of this kind, we'll talk here about only two.</p>
 
 
<p>The first one is what Doug called CoDIAK.  The point is – this technology is a QUANTUM LEAP!!! The printing press wasn't – it's just an effectivization of what the scribes were doing in monasteries, while copying manuscripts!</p>
 
 
<p>But what Doug foresaw (already in 1951 - and then immediately dedicated his career to fulfilling that vision) was that when digital computer technology is interconnected into a network – COMPLETELY NEW PATTERNS OF INTERACTION and SYSTEMIC SOLUTIONS become possible! We can in effect THINK TOGETHER – like cells collected together into a collective mind. </p>
 
 
<p>Now the second idea. It's (an instantiation of) the new way to think. It's more general. It's how to innovate – how to use our creative capabilities in general. It's what we are calling [[systemic innovation|<em>systemic innovation</em>]]. </p>
 
 
<p>Doug developed a specific practical approach to [[systemic innovation|<em>systemic innovation</em>]]. He talked about AUGMENTING our capabilities. Capability infrastructure. Capabilities live in a relative hierarchy (see picture). The capability to communicate in writing, for example, depends on the technological capability to have some medium (clay tablets, paper and pen...); and on the social capabilities comprising script and education. Innovation, according to Doug, would dexterously be guided by the capability hierarchy combined with obvious questions. Looking at our needs: What capabilities we now most urgently need? What could make a largest positive difference? Looking at a new or potential technology: What capabilities could this augment? Looking at both: What more do we need, so that this new technology may empower the kind of capabilities that we most urgently need?</p>
 
 
<p>The answer to this latter question is most interesting. It's what we've been calling [[systemic innovation|<em>systemic innovation</em>]]. This capability most directly has to do with the DIRECTION in which we innovate. And with the DIRECTION of the metaphorical bus. But let's go slowly and develop our understanding of [[systemic innovation|<em>systemic innovation</em>]] by talking about another giant, ERich Jantsch – whose name we associate most closely with [[systemic innovation|<em>systemic innovation</em>]] (just ad Doug Engelbart is most closely associated with [[knowledge federation|<em>knowledge federation</em>]]. </p>

<div class="col-md-9"><p>Remember our holarchy from IMAGES? We string stories together into threads. They synergize and create a dramatic effect. At the same time each of them becomes part of a larger story.</p></div>

  <div class="col-md-3"><h4>– The university should make structural changes within itself to enhance the society's ability for continued self-renewal (EXACT?)</h4></div>
 
 
<div class="col-md-6"><p>Two reasons why we chose Jantsch to represent [[systemic innovation|<em>systemic innovation</em>]]: (1) linked with contemporary issue (2) WORKED to establish the SI as praxis, to change the systems... to ESTABLISH SI as an academic field (details follow)</p>
 
 
<p>In the last decade of his considerably brief life and career Jantsch passionately focused on what he saw as "evolutionary paradigm". This will turn out to be a substantial part of the  emerging paradigm. Jantsch of course placed it into the paradigm of conventional science... When, however, evolution is combined with [[design epistemology|<em>design epistemology</em>]], the result is what Banathy called "evolutionary guidance". A BIIIIIIG point here is to create information that can provide evolutionary guidance; and to USE knowledge as evolutionary guidance (not as a commodity...). We'll say more about this.</p>
 
 
<p>And this additional reason – it's such a nice story! Like Doug, he passionately advocated the reconceiving of the university to make our knowledge work adaptable to new demands, to new challenges. And like Doug, he never found a footing for his ideas at a university. Doug was mostly present at Stanford. Jantsch brought his ideas to the MIT and to the UC Berkeley. We are talking about three leading US technological universities!</p>
 
 
<p>And finally yes, there's another reason – Jantsch and Engelbart combine so nicely into a story. In the 1970s both struggled unsuccessfully to have their ideas accepted – while working across the GGB from each other (Jantsch was at Berkeley, Doug was at Stanford Research Institute in Menlo Park). As it turns out, they each needed each other to make their visions happen! Yet they never collaborated and (as far as we are aware) didn't even know about each other! So the story line is developed by telling how those two streams of thought finally found each other, and what ensued... But that will come as desert here, at the very end. First let's hear about Jantsch.</p></div>

<div class="col-md-9"><p>So the story about Jantsch: "The task is nothing less than to build a new society and new institutions for it. With technology having become the most powerful change agent in our society, decisive battles will be won or lost by the measure of how seriously we take the challenge of restructuring the “joint systems” of society and technology." Like Engelbart, Jantsch was truly a progenitor of the new paradigm! In 1968, upon giving the opening keynote at the inaugural meeting of The Club of Rome (global think tank organized to investigate the future prospects of our civilization), Jantsch saw clearly what needed to be done, and organized some of the leading systems scientists to (as we now call it) federate their ideas together and compose a detailed answer. What will be the institution whose role will be to implement these necessary changes? Jantsch concluded that it would have to be the university.  In 1969 Jantsch was at the MIT, lobbying... and writing a report about the structure of the future university. "The university must xxx itself for the new purpose of giving our society the capability for continued self-renewal. (SEE THE EXACT TEXT)</p>
 
 
<p>So you may see now the connection between democracy and innovation: Giving DIRECTION to our 'bus' (modernity, or civilization) means directing innovation (which induces change). We need two things: information (supplied by [[knowledge federation|<em>knowledge federation</em>]]) and innovation (developed as [[systemic innovation|<em>systemic innovation</em>]]). So they two together comprise the "headlights and steering and breaking controls" that Doug talked about...</p></div>

Here's one emerging – it's the insight that we should DIRECT our creative work, that we should use information and knowledge – how fundamental can anything be (pragmatically speaking)?</p>
 
 
<p>So let's revisit the way this is currently done, so that we know what exactly we are talking about.</p>
 
 
<p>How are they directed today? Well, we trust "the invisible hand" – and other than that we let everyone be as self-serving as one can. The rationale is .  The reason why we begin this part of our conversation by pointing to the steam engine is because it started the creation of machines that either made the human labor dramatically more efficient, or made it unnecessary altogether. But since then we have invented just about every gadget that can save human labor or make it more effective or efficient. So what else can happen? And especially – what can be a <em>dramatic</em> news on that frontier?</p></div>

  <div class="col-md-3"><h4>To have control, we must have suitable feedback.</h4></div>
 
 
<div class="col-md-6"><p>There's an alternative. To see it, we bring in another giant. The point is that there's a whole science behind this. Or better said – there should be one! Right after the WW2, a group of .. Let Wiener be the icon. In 1948 Cybernetics he addresses the question – how should innovation be directed. "There's an article of faith... Unfortunately...". And he goes on to show why.</p>
 
 
<p>The alternative? Of course – to develop the knowledge about systems. How their structure drives their behavior. If a car has no headlights and no breaks, we know what's going to happen. But do we have such knowledge on a much higher – and incomparably more important – level? Do we USE such knowledge?</p>
 
 
 
<p>The relationship with democracy?</p>
 
 
<p>There are two points of view, corresponding to the two paradigms. Just as science is is considered to be "what the scientists are doing", so is democracy considered to consist of the familiar mechanisms comprising the "free press", the representative bodies, the debates and the elections etc. When all this is in place and functions as it's supposed to, it is believed that the democracy is also in place, and it functions as it should. A nightmare scenario in this paradigm is the dictatorship, where the control of the society has been taken away from the people by a dictator. But there's another, much worse nightmare scenario, and we are living it! It is the scenario where <em>nobody</em> has control – because the minimal structure is lacking in the system. We called it, metaphorically, the headlights, and so did Engelbart. The cyberneticians have called it "feedback and control". To have the function of control, a system must have suitable information, and the ability to use that information to make the necessary changes. Our social system, flagrantly, does not have that structure. It doesn't even have the awareness that it needs one!</p>

  <div class="col-md-3"><h4>The opportunities opened up by [[systemic innovation|<em>systemic innovation</em>]] have a flair of a fairy tale.</h4></div>
 
 
<div class="col-md-6"><p>Let us make sure we make it clear that this is not just about the problems and challenges. On the contrary! It stands to reason that a dramatic improvement of our use of our core capabilities will lead to dramatic improvements across the board. Here's how we illustrated that at our presentation of "The Game-Changing Game" (a generic [[prototypes|<em>prototype</em>]] method for [[systemic innovation|<em>systemic innovation</em>]]) at the Bay Area future salon, in 2012.</p>
 
 
<p> The Game-Changing Game is of course not a conventional game, but a game-changing way to conduct one's career, where one does not learn how to perform in a profession and 'plays' competitively, but is empowered to conduct one's career by <em>changing</em> the profession or the system, i.e. by <em>changing</em> the rules. At the beginning of The Game, which is orchestrated online, one meets a metaphorical fairy who offers to fulfill a most audacious gain or contribution. "Make a fortune in business"; "Save lives and reduce suffering"; "Solve global problems" are some of the choices.</p>
 
 
<p>So just think about the specific one of those choices – make a large contribution to human knowledge.  What is <em>the largest</em> contribution to human knowledge you are able to imagine? (Our clue is provided in the references at the bottom.)</p></div>

<div class="col-md-5"><p>Perhaps the main reason why the best ideas of our best minds are still waiting to be discovered by us others is – paradoxically – that they <em>do</em> make a difference! To make sense, and for us to appreciate it, an idea must fit in snuggly with our other ideas, or in other words – into our [[paradigm]]. But – as we mentioned – the best ideas of our best minds now compose a <em>different</em> paradigm! So it is only in that new context that their meaning and value can be understood.</p>
 
 
<p>Engelbart was well aware that it was a paradigm he was up against. When in the early 1990s he undertook to share his vision with the Silicon Valley academics, business people and developers, by teaching his "Bootstrap Seminar" at the Stanford University, he would begin with a series of vignettes illustrating the paradoxical responses to paradigms (an example is the prediction of Thomas J. Watson, IBM chair and CEO, who in the 1940s predicted that "there is a world market for about five computers"). It didn't help. And so we were are able to point out, in our proposal to some of the leaders of Stanford University and Google to use the opportunity of the 50th anniversary of Doug's Demo to correct this error (see the references below) that every time Englebart spoke or was spoken about or celebrated, there was an invisible 'elephant in the room'... </p>
 
 
<p>And so we have another keyword, the [[elephant|<em>elephant</em>]].  It conveniently points to two metaphors – "the elephant in the room" and "blind men and the elephant". Both apply most snuggly to our situation! An important point here is that as the organs of an elephant will only be truly understood when seen as functional parts of the whole big thing, so can the visions and contributions of [[giants]] only be understood when seen in the context of the new order of things which they are bringing into existence. </p>
 
 
<p>And so we undertake to depict the whole big thing – by producing this website. And also in other ways and places, as we'll show next.</p>

It does not, for example, even mention the most telling story of Doug Engelbart, which we have just seen! The poster was created for academic researchers who are <em>already</em> systemic thinkers working on large contemporary issues (the specific occasion was the 2017 yearly conference of the Research in Systemic Design academic community in Oslo). Can we tell even <em>such</em> people something that might be unexpected and relevant?</p>
 
 
<p>There are some interesting questions one might have in mind when approaching this poster. Why have the pioneers of [[knowledge federation|<em>knowledge federation</em>]] and [[systemic innovation|<em>systemic innovation</em>]] not been heard and understood? Consider the importance of this matter – how to explain that for decades the leading universities ignored their calls for a quantum-leap improvement of the very way in which knowledge is created and handled?  Consider the larger-than-life benefits that can result from [[systemic innovation|<em>systemic innovation</em>]] – why is even the very idea of it commonly ignored and resisted? </p>
 
 
<p>Ultimately these question converge to a single insight – about the direction our societal and cultural evolution (and in particular the evolution of our knowledge and knowledge work) have taken. We reach it by weaving together a multiplicity of insights from the humanities. </p></div>

Threads, each composed of three [[vignettes|<em>vignettes</em>, are  woven two-and-two together into two [[patterns|<em>patterns</em>]], which together point to a  [[gestalt|<em>gestalt</em>]]. The right-hand side joins two remedial design patterns into a series of [[prototypes|<em>prototypes</em>]], where they are put to use. </p></div>

We let you guess or explore the details by examining [http://www.knowledgefederation.net/Misc/ThePSposter.pdf the poster] and the linked documents (the QR codes are also hyperlinks; further details will soon be provided); and we only highlight the two main points, represented by the two [[patterns|<em>patterns</em>]]. </p>
 
 
<p>The [[Wiener's paradox]] points to a most interesting and most significant fact (amply supported by presented and other [[vignettes|<em>vignettes</em>]], and also <em>explained</em> by the provided [[threads|<em>threads</em>]] – that the systems community has not communicated to the public even its two most significant insights! Those are:
 
<ul>
 
<li>The society's handling of information (or what the cyberneticians call "feedback and control") is dysfunctional</li>
 
<li>The evolution and functioning of the society's core systems cannot be relegated to "the market"; systemic insights and action must be used</li>
 
</ul>
 
The paradox is that both Norbert Wiener, and then also the academic community that he helped initiate, <em>committed heir own findings to that same dysfunctional "feedback and control"</em>  – and continued to do that for seventy years! But those people are systemic researchers and thinkers; should they now be mindful of <em>their own</em> system?</p>
 
 
<p>What's really going on here?</p>
 
 
<p>The other two threads weave together insights from leaders in sociology, cognitive science, philosophy... The result is a [[patterns|<em>pattern</em>]] that offers an explanation to the above phenomenon, which is called <em>homo ludens</em>. (A closely related [[patterns|<em>pattern</em>]] called [[power structures|<em>power structure</em>]], created early in the [[polyscopy|<em>polyscopy</em>]] development, provides a more in-depth explanation of the same centrally important phenomenon.) The explanation is that – while biologically equipped to be the <em>homo sapiens</em>, we've been culturally and socially evolving as [[homo ludens|<em>homo ludens</em>]], "man the (social game-)player". Having been placed in an increasingly complex world, without information that would help him understand it and manage it, the <em>homo sapiens</em> has adapted culturally by becoming the [[homo ludens|<em>homo ludens</em>]] – i.e. by learning how to perform in social roles, notably in his profession, as one would learn the rules of a game; and by playing competitively, for what he perceives as his own win or gain.</p>
 
 
<p>Three interesting and significant consequences result from the [[homo ludens|<em>homo ludens</em>]] manner of evolution:
 
<ul>
 
<li>The systems that result can be dysfunctional to any imaginable degree, without us noticing that; the [[homo ludens|<em>homo ludens</em>]] is just as little interested and aware of the larger purpose of his activity,  as an avid golfer may be interested in the larger purpose of his game</li>
 
<li>The systems win, and we all lose (again without us noticing that); we can all (both "the 99%" and "the 1%") can be extremely anxious and busy spinning the wheels of ill-conceived ways of doing things</li>
 
<li>The academic system – whose purpose, in everyone's mind perhaps, is to help us be the <em>homo sapiens</em> – might itself be going down the [[homo ludens|<em>homo ludens</em>]] evolutionary path, and even taking everyone else with it (through education, and in other ways)</li>
 
</ul>

<div class="col-md-3"><h4>The right-hand side orchestrates the development of remedies.</h4></div>
 
 
<div class="col-md-9"><p>Two design patterns – [[systemic innovation|<em>systemic innovation</em>]] and [[guided evolution|<em>guided evolution</em>]] – lead on the  a variety of projects or [[prototypes|<em>prototypes</em>]], of which only five are shown. Since the prototypes are the theme of [[APPLICATIONS|Federation through Applications]], we'll here only highlight two: [[The Lighthouse]], and the [[Liberation]] book manuscript. Each of them responds, in its own distinct way, to the core issue of guiding or redirecting the societal evolution. The Lighthouse has been proposed to the systems community (at two of the International Society for the Systems Sciences conferences) as a project to federate together a single insight – the one that Wiener was pointing to (that we cannot rely in our societal evolution on Darwinian "survival of the fittest"). And by doing that, to begin evolving a different systemic structure and a corresponding new (more socially present and responsive) way of working within the systems community.</p></div>

<div class="col-md-9"><p>Notice that this was an intervention. We made the poster interactive (it is possible to click on a link, or open it from a poster on the wall by pointing a mobile device its QR code, and contribute). Our goal was to challenge the very structure of conventional conference, and to engage the RSD community to co-create a new way of working together. Our goal was to engage the community both in developing the presented messages <em>and</em> the presented interaction design. The idea was to make our [[prototypes|<em>prototype</em>]] alive and evolving in that way. The message of it all was "let's [[bootstrapping|<em>bootstrap</em>]]" a new system together! But our appeal had just as little (or no) effect as our similar appeal to the systems community that we've just mentioned! And as our other similar appeals!</p>
 
 
<p>But doesn't this once again confirm the [[homo ludens|<em>homo ludens</em>]] theory just mentioned?</p>
 
 
<p>Among ourselves we are calling these interventions [[Quixotte stunts|<em>Quixotte stunts</em>]]. On the surface it might appear that we've lost touch with reality, and are – armed with outdated ideas of purpose and valor –  making assaults on windmills. But in reality our purpose is exactly to show just how much our academic communities and culture have become like those old windmills... </p>

As the President of the ISSS, on the yearly conference of this largest organization of systems scientists, which was taking place in Haiphong, Vietnam, Alexander Laszlo initiated a self-organization toward collective intelligence. </p>
 
 
<p>He really had two pivotal ideas. One was to make the community intelligent. The other one was to make an intelligent system for coordinating change initiatives around the globe. (An extension of).</p>
 
 
<p>Alexander was practically born into this way of thinking and working. His father...</p></div>

<p>The meaning of [[The Lighthouse]] (although it belongs really to prototypes, and to Applications): It breaks the spell of the Wiener's paradox. It creates a lighthouse, for the systems community, to attract stray ships to their harbor. It employs strategic - political thinking, systemic self-organization in a research community, and contemporary communication design, to create impactful messages about a single issue, and placing them into the orbit:  CAN WE TRUST "THE MARKET"? or do we need systemic understanding and innovation and design?</p></div>

<div class="col-md-9"><p><b>Our evangelizing prototypes for systemic innovation.</b> The emerging societal paradigm is often seen as a result of some specific change, for example to "the spiritual outlook on life", or to "systemic thinking". A down-on-earth, life-changing insight can, however, more easily be reached by observing the stupendous inadequacy of our various institutions and other systems, and understanding it as a consequence of our present values and way of looking at the world. The "evangelizing prototypes" are real-life histories and sometimes fictional stories, whose purpose is to bring this large insight or [[gestalt|<em>gestalt</em>]] across.  They point to uncommonly large possibilities for improving our condition by improving the systems. Yet perhaps even more spectacular examples of mis-evolution, and far more readily accessible possibilities for contribution through improvement, may be found in our own system – knowledge-work in general, and academic research, communication and education in particular. (One might say that the bankers are doing a good job making money for the people who have money...) That is what these evangelizing prototypes for knowledge federation are intended to show. On several occasions we began by asking the audience to imagine meeting a fairy and being approached by (the academic variant of) the usual question "Make a wish – for the largest contribution to human knowledge you may be able to imagine!" What would you wish for? We then asked the audience to think about the global knowledge work as a mechanism or algorithm; and to imagine what sort of contribution to knowledge a significant improvement to this algorithm would be. We then re-told the story about the post-war sociology, as told by Pierre Bourdieu, to show that even enormously large, orders-of-magnitude improvements are possible! Envisioning the paradigm

The invisible elephant

You have noticed that in knowledge federation we like to use metaphors to describe the emerging paradigm and its various elements? There are reasons for that. George Lakoff found out (to name one of them), that our thinking is largely in terms of metaphors – that we use physical metaphors for abstract or high-level concepts. So how much more do we need them when we are speaking about things that are yet to emerge, things that nobody has yet seen?

So as we did in Federation through Images, here too we begin with a metaphorical image. It's the Invisible Elephant ideogram. We use the invisible elephant metaphor for the whole big thing, the entire large Renaissance-like paradigm that, we promised you, wants to emerge as soon as we begin to 'connect the dots'. And so that's so that's what we are about to see – how the invisible elephant begins to become visible as soon as we begin to 'connect the dots'.

We shall not attempt here to show the whole 'big animal' (we'll do quite a bit of that in Federation through Applications and Conversations), but only a small part. That part will be, as you'll have no difficulty noticing, the very same one that was the theme of Federation through Images – the need for and the possibility of a whole new paradigm in knowledge work. Or to use the metaphor we used there – the feasibility of 'turning candles into light bulbs'. But here we'll approach this theme from an entirely different angle (or a couple of angles to be precise) than we did there.


The nature of our stories

How to lift up an idea of a giant from undeserved anonymity

We tell vignettes – engaging, lively, catchy, sticky... real-life people and situation stories, to distill the core ideas of the most daring thinkers from the vocabulary of their field, and to give them the power of impact. Our vignettes are chosen to represent much of our whole situation, on the verge of a large shift, in a snapshot. In that way they are – just like our ideograms – a very efficient way to join together and communicate a wealth of insights.

In The Paradigm Strategy poster (discussed briefly at the bottom here and in more detail in Federation through Conversations] we show how to join the vignettes together into threads, and threads into patterns and patterns into a gestalt – an overarching view of our situation, which shows how the situation may (need to) be handled.

While it is the ideas that lead to the gestalt, it is the gestalt that gives the ideas their relevance, and their deeper reason for existence.

The 21st century printing press

Of course it's the Web – but...

The printing press is a suitable metaphor and a point of departure for us, because of its central role in the emergence of the last big societal paradigm shift. Indeed, Gutenberg's has often been credited for the spreading of knowledge that resulted in the Enlightenment, and all the other related transformations. What might play a similar role today? The story told next will highlight some of the main points in a palpable and vivid way.

Engelbart's epiphany

Having decided, as a novice engineer in December of 1950, to direct his career so as to maximize its benefits to the mankind, Douglas Engelbart thought intensely for three months about the best way to do that. Then he had an epiphany.

On a convention of computer professionals in 1968 Engelbart and his SRI-based lab demonstrated the computer technology we are using today – computers linked together into a network, people interacting with computers via video terminals and a mouse and windows – and through them with one another.

In the 1990s it was finally understood, or in any case some people understood, that it was not Steve Jobs and Bill Gates who invented the technology, or even the XEROS PARC from which they took it. Engelbart received all imaginable honors that an inventor can receive. Yet he made it clear, and everyone around him knew, that he felt celebrated for a wrong reason. And that the gist of his vision had not yet been understood, or put to use. "Engelbart's unfinished revolution" was coined as the theme for the 1998 Stanford University celebration of his Demo. And it stuck.

The man whose ideas created "the revolution in the Valley" passed away in 2013 – feeling he had failed.

Engelbart's unfinished revolution

What was it that Engelbart saw in his vision, and pursued so passionately throughout his long career? What was it that people around him could not see? We'll answer by telling you a story, about one of the many events where Engelbart was celebrated, and when his vision was in the spotlight – a videotaped panel that was organized for Doug at Google in 2007. This will give us an opportunity to explain the vision – if not with Doug's own words – then with his own Powerpoint slides.

It seems best to introduce it by another anecdote, and – if not by his own words, then at least by his own Powerpoint slides. Here they are.

Around 2007 time it became clear that his long career was coming to an end. The title "A Call to Action!" (with the exclamation mark!) he choose for his presentation was obviously intended make it clear that what he wanted to give to Google, and to the world, was a direction and a call to pursue it.

The first slides points to a large and unfulfilled opportunity that is immanent in digital technology. To realize it, we need to change our way of thinking.

The second slide talks about a 'vehicle' we are riding in. This image is so close to our bus with candle headlights, the Modernity ideogram that was discussed at length in Federation through Images, that we now only need to point to it for interpretation. OK, yes, there's also more in Doug's slide, he's talking about "the steering and braking controls". We'll come back to that in a moment.

The third slide was intended to explain the big fat point, what really Doug's vision was about. But let's hold back a moment, let's not rush with the explanation.

If we should now tell you the solution to this riddle in our own words, we risk repeating what happened with Doug's vision so many times before. So no, let's do this differently. Let us stay with the second slide for another moment. Let us first materialize at least a little bit of the invisible elephant – and see how the second slide fits in.

What the visionaries saw

Every time Engelbart was present in a room talking, or being celebrated, there was also an elephant in the room. Imagine a huge animal, in the midst of a large university auditorium – should this not be a first-rate sensation? But alas – the elephant was invisible; or better said – nobody saw it except Doug!

We use this metaphor to point to the nature of Engelbart's situation – which was indeed (we shall see examples in a moment) also the situation of so many of the last century visionary thinkers. Think of an elephant in the room five centuries ago, not today. Nobody in the room has see one in real life. And even Doug, and any other visionary, sees the elephant from a specific angle of looking, as determined by his field of interest. And so they talk about 'the fan' or 'the hose' or 'the rope' – when what they rally mean is the ears and the trunk and the tail of the big animal.

And so before we tell you the punchline, the big point of The Incredible History of Doug – follow us through a detour. We want to materialize – well, not of course the whole elephant (even in this whole website we are only materializing parts), but enough of it so that you may begin to connect the dots and begin to get the sense of the elephant's weight and size.

Before we begin, let's clarify a subtle point we want to point to with this metaphor. It has been said that a visionary is a person who looks at what we all are looking at, and sees something entirely different than what we see. Yet even a visionary sees through the binocular of his culture. And when he attempts to describe what he sees, he dilutes his vision still further, by trying to render it in words that other people can grasp (although it cannot really be described in that way). Our point is that the most interesting and relevant question here is not what any of our visionaries "really" saw (even they couldn't tell us that). What really interests us above all is the nature of 'the elephant' itself! So it's a clear view of that really big and mighty thing that we are after.


The future of democracy

What we shall see next is roughly the same part of the invisible elephant that Engelbart saw – but from an entirely different angle. We'll be talking about democracy – but you can already anticipate that we are not departing from our theme. Doug's second slide was obviously talking about the way in which we control – or don't control our journey into the future and our destiny.

A whole new nightmare scenario

In the old ( and still so stubbornly dominant traditional order of things) democracy is what it is: free elections, free press... As long as we have that, we assume, we have democracy. We the people are in control. The nightmare scenario in this order of things is a dictatorship, where a dictator takes from the people those affordances of control and tokens of freedom.

But there is another nightmare scenario, much worse indeed than the one just mentioned. And that is what Doug was pointing to in his second slide at Google. It is the scenario where nobody has control! Simply because our system or systems don't have the structure in which control is at all possible (or metaphorically, because they lack suitable "headlights" and "steering and braking"). A dictator may come to his senses. His more reasonable son may succeed him. But if the system is not controllable by design – well then we really have a problem!

The cybernetic view

A scientific reader may have noticed that Doug's seemingly innocent metaphor in Slide 2 also has a technical-scientific interpretation. In cybernetics, which is a scientific study of (the relationship between information and) control, "feedback and control" that are household terms. Just as the bus must have functioning headlights and steering and breaking controls, so must any system have suitable feedback (information inflow, and use) and control (a way to apply the incoming information to correct its course, or more generally behavior) – if it is to be controllable.

In just a moment we'll be connecting the dots from that side of our puzzle – What is it that the people in cybernetics saw about the nature of our 'headlights' and 'steering and braking controls'? The idea is to make steps toward the kind of democracy, that is, toward the kind of 'headlights' and 'steering and braking controls' that we the people may need, if we (as civilization, and as species) want to be around for another millennium. We'll introduce the cybernetic point of view, however, by talking about a man whose insight inspired (in part, at least) both Doug and the cyberneticians!

Our headlights are inadequate

Vannevar Bush was the giant who most vividly and from an authoritative position pointed to the urgent need for (what we are calling) knowledge federation – already in 1945!

A pre-WW2 pioneer of computing machinery, and professor and dean at the MIT, During the war Bush served as the leader of the entire US scientific effort – supervising about 6000 leading scientists, and assuring that the Free World is a step ahead in developing all imaginable weaponry including The Bomb. And so in 1945, the war just barely being finished, Bush wrote an article titled "As We May Think", where the tone is "OK, we've won the great war. But one other problem still remains to which we scientists now need to give the highest priority – and that is to recreate what we do with knowledge after it's been published". He urged the scientists to focus on developing suitable technology and processes.

Engelbart heard him. He read Bush's article in 1947, as a young army recruit, in a Red Cross library in the Philippines, and it helped him 'see the light' a couple of years later. But Bush's article inspired in part also another development – and that's what we'll turn to next.

The science behind democracy

Norbert Wiener was recognized as a potential giant very early. After having studied mathematics, zoology and philosophy, he finally got his doctorate in mathematical logic from Harvard, at the tender age of 17! Then he went on to do seminal work in a number of fields, one of which was cybernetics.

Norbert Wiener mentions Bush in a just a touch convoluted yet for us most interesting and most relevant argument, in the last chapter of the first, 1948, edition of Cybernetics. The argument combines two points that are central here:

  • Our communication, or feedback, or 'headlights' is broken, and urgently requires an update
  • We cannot relegate our 'drive into the future' (daily choices and long-term evolution; the executive and legislative function...) to "the invisible hand" of the market. Suitable information must be created and put to use, if we should have the ability to steer a viable course.

Listen for a moment to Wiener's language:

There is a belief, current in many countries, which has been elevated to the rank of an official article of faith in the United States, that free competition is itself a homeostatic process: that in a free market, the individual selfishness of the bargainers, each seeking to sell as high and buy as low as possible, will result in the end of a stable dynamics of prices, and with redound to the greatest common good. This is associated with the very comforting view that the individual entrepreneur, in seeking to forward his own interest, is in some manner a public benefactor, and has thus earned the great reward with which society has showered him. Unfortunately, the evidence, such as it is, is against this simple-minded theory.

The "homeostatic process" here is quite precisely the function that is implemented by 'the headlights'. It's been defined as "feedback mechanism inducing measures to keep a system continuing".


The future of innovation

The science behind innovation

It stands to reason that the contemporary issues show that we've been misusing or misdirecting our rapidly growing capability to innovate (create, induce change). And that if we directed this capability more suitably, we could not only solve our problems, but also draw dramatically higher benefits from innovation. And that the key to this change might be the creation and use of suitable information, which would orient our creative action. But what might this information – and this new creative action – be like? Erich Jantsch called it "rational creative action". The slogan is most beautiful – "obviously, there are all kinds of ways to be creative; but if we want our creative action to be rational – well, then here are the guidelines to be followed.

Having received his doctorate in astrophysics at the tender age of 22, from the University of Vienna, Erich Jantsch realized that it is here on Earth that his attention is needed. And so he was soon researching (for OECD in Paris), on what you might readily identify as the theme of "Engelbart's unfinished revolution" – the ways in which technology is being developed and used, in the context of the goal of steering a viable course into the future.

And so when The Club of Rome (global think tank organized to research the future prospects of mankind) had its first, inaugural meeting in Rome, in 1968, it was Jantsch who was given the honor to give the opening keynote. Naturally – because, isn't it clear, the completely new problems that the humanity may have or already had all had to do with the correct use, or misuse, of the new power that the technology has given us. The five people who ended up initiating The Club, all really smart people, had no difficulty realizing that it was not problems they should be focusing on, but the "problematique", i.e. the overall condition from which the problems arise, and which may enable or prevent their resolution.

While the longer story of Jantsch is most interesting, and also his deeper insights, we shall here only name a few steps in his thinking process following the Club of Rome meeting – because that is what we, above all, need from him at this moment.

How do you picture what Erick Jantsch foresaw as the design object of our time, and called "joint systems of society and technology"? We gave our design team what might be the challenge of our time – to make this design object palpable and clear to people. The above System ideogram is what they came up with.

We let this ideogram stand for this key challenge – to help people see themselves as parts of larger systems. To see how much those systems influence our lives. And to perceive those systems as our, that is human creations – and see that we can also re-create them!

Changing scales

Polyscopy as a methodology in knowledge creation and use has an interesting counterpart in systemic innovation as we are presenting it here. Yes, we have been focused so much on the details, that we completely neglected the big picture. But information – and also innovation, of course – exist on all levels of detail! Should we not make sure that the big picture is properly in place, that we have the right direction, or that the large system is properly functioning, before we start worrying about the details?

The next industrial revolution

So forget for a moment all that has been said here. This is not about the global issues, or about information technology. We are talking about something far larger and more fundamental. Think about "the systems in which we live and work", as Bela H. Banathy framed them. Imagine them as gigantic machines, which we are of course part of. Their function is to take our daily work as input, and produce socially useful output. Do they? How well are they constructed? Are they wasting our daily work, or even worse – are they using it against our best interests?

Reinventing the society's feedback and control

INSIGHT 1: Feedback-and-control must look into the future and redesign (if needed) the system itself (structure, policy, values).

"It is absolutely necessary to find a way to change course", Aurelio Peccei (the co-founder, firs president and the motor power behind The Club of Rome) wrote in 1980 based on this think tank's first decade of research. It did not take Jantsch very long to understand that the capability to change course depended on our society's (or more generally our systems') capability to re-create its feedback and control (or more generally – themselves). But what should the new feedback-and-control be like?

Following the CoR meeting in Rome, Jantsch gathered some of the creative leaders in the systems community to draft a solution. They called it "planning" – but this planning had nothing to do with the kind of planning they did in the former Soviet Union. As a first step, we copy and paste this description from a 2013 article.

Rational creative action begins with forecasting, which explores different future scenario; it ends with an action selected to enhance the likelihood of the desired scenarios. A key role (a ‘differ- ence that makes a difference’) is played by an unorthodox approach to planning, drafted in “Bel- lagio Declaration on Planning” (Jantsch et al., 1969):

[T]he pursuance of orthodox planning is quite insufficient, in that it seldom does more than touch a system through changes of the variables. Planning must be concerned with the structural design of the system itself and involved in the formation of policy.”

Policies, which are the objective of planning (as the authors of the Bellagio Declaration envi- sioned it) specify both the institutional changes and the norms and value changes that might be necessary to make our goal-oriented action in a true sense rational and creative (Jantsch, 1970):

Policies are the first expressions and guiding images of normative thinking and action. In other words, they are the spiritual agents of change—change not only in the ways and means by which bureaucracies and technocracies operate, but change in the very institu- tions and norms which form their homes and castles.”

The future of the uniuversity

INSIGHT 2: The university as institution must take the leadership role in giving our society the capability to recreate itself (its systems)

Next Jantsch pondered the key question: “Who (i.e. what institution) might spearhead rational creative action in real-world systemic practice?” We conclude together with him that the univer- sity will need to play this key role; and that university will need to change to adapt to this role:

[T]he university should make structural changes within itself toward a new purpose of enhancing the society’s capacity for continuous self-renewal. It may have to become a political institution, interacting with government and industry in the planning and design- ing of society’s systems, and controlling the outcomes of the introduction of technology into those systems. This new leadership role of the university should provide an inte- grated approach to world systems, particularly the ‘joint systems’ of society and technol- ogy.”

In 1969 Jantsch spent a semester at the MIT, where he was talking to the administration and the faculty at the MIT. He believed that the “structural changes” could naturally begin there, and where the above excerpt was written as part of his report and proposal.

The future of evolution

INSIGHT 3: The core of our strategy must be to "design for evolution" – make our systems capable of evolving in a good way, self-organizing, directing their evolution...

Jantsch spent the last decade of his life in Berkeley, writing prolifically, teaching occasional seminars at U.C. Berkeley, but never acquiring a regular position. This last stage of his life and career was marked by the "evolutionary paradigm" – and hence here is the third key insight we want to adopt from him.


Wiener's paradox

Academic publishing had no effect

Ronald Reagan is not presented here as one of the giants, but as a person who none the less can open up our eyes to the nature of our situation, and of the emerging paradigm, perhaps even a lot better than the words of the more visionary people may. In the 1980 – when Erich Jantsch passed away at the tender age of 51 (an obituary mentioned malnutrition as a possible cause...), having just issued two books about the "evolutionary paradigm" in science and in our understanding and handling of systems, Ronald Reagan became the 40th U.S. president on a clear agenda: We can only trust the market! The moment we begin to interfere with its perfect mechanisms, we are asking for trouble.

The point here is not whether he was right or wrong, but the lack of knowledge federation. The words of our giants just simply had no effect on how the votes were cast – and how the world ended up being steered!

What we have is a paradox

"As long as a problem is treated as a paradox, it can never be resolved,...". What we have is not a problem, it's a paradox! To see that, notice that Norbert Wiener etc.

In 2015 we presented an abstract and talk titled "Wiener's paradox – we can resolve it together" to the 59th conference of the International Society for the Systems Sciences. The point was.

The future of communication

What Engelbart saw

IT can play THE enabler role in the above process! The point is precisely that something MUCH much... bigger and more beautiful can be made possible with the help of "digital technology" – than what the printing press made possible. BUT the technology is not enough - WE ALSO HAVE TO CHANGE OUR WAY OF THINKING!!!

The second slide explains what exactly the new thinking might be. Yes, as we said, the slide points to all that's just been said, in no ambiguous terms. But there is also a word for this way of thinking – and the word is "systemic".

The third slide then is his, and our, main point. Why is systemic thinking necessary if the digital technology should give us the benefits that it has in store for us?

The slide has three points, explaining his "dream". The first says that "digital technology could greatly augment the human capabilities for dealing with complex, urgent problems". So imagine once again Doug as an idealistic novice engineer, barely 25 years old, thinking about how best to contribute to the world. He has realized that the humanity has problems it doesn't know how to solve, whose "complexity times urgency" factor is growing at an accelerated speed or "exponentially".

The second point links the familiar digital computer infrastructure – the machine, the high-speed network, the interactive interface – with "super new nervous system". We'll come back to that. For now just notice that the "super new nervous system" is precisely what we now do have.

The third point begins again with the word "dream", suggesting that what follows truly remained just a dream. So what was the unfulfilled part of his dream? 'That people could seriously appreciate the potential of harnessing that technological and social nervous system to improve the collective IQ of our various organizations." To Doug "the collective IQ" meant the collective capability to deal with "complexity times urgency".

To see his really central point, imagine the humanity as a large organism. It has lately grown extremely ("exponentially") fast in both size and power. It has also lately gotten a whole new nervous system. The future of this organism, Doug suggested, will crucially depend on his ability to learn to coordinate the actions of his various organs by taking advantage of this nervous system. To see what's missing, imagine the organism going toward a wall. Imagine that the eyes of the organism see that, but are trying to communicate it to the brain by writing academic articles in some specialized academic field of interest.

Doug's big point

The point here, the really big and central one, is that to take advantage of the "technological and social nervous system", the "cells" in that system (namely we, the people) need to specialize and divide our knowledge-work labor in entirely different ways than what was possible without the "nervous system".

However big a disruption it was, the printing press could only vastly speed up the copying of manuscripts, which the monks in the monasteries were already doing.

To understand still more closely what's missing, think of all the cells in the gigantic organism trying to communicate with one another by merely using the "super new nervous system" to merely broadcast messages. When the new technology is applied in that way, the result is, of course what we've been talking all along – the information glut. And ultimately confusion and chaos!

The incredible part

You might what's so incredible in this history of Doug? We didn't really tell you that yet. So here it is.

To see it, think about a brilliant mind saying, in all clarity, "this is what the humanity must do to solve its problems and evolve further!" Imagine him using his best efforts to first of all become able to do that, and then actually producing the enabling technology. Imagine us the people using this technology to only speed up immensely what we were already doing. Think about the Silicon Valley failing to understand, or even hear, its genius in residence – even after having recognized him as that! Think that to really understand Doug's various technical contributions, one really must see them in the context of his larger vision. Imagine that the first four slides, which define this vision, were not even shown at the 2007 presentation at Google! If you Google it, you will find that Doug is introduced as "the inventor of the computer mouse". And that there is no mention, really, of any sort of call to action!

Engelbart's contributions

Must be understood in the light of the above – ALL that he did were building blocks in society's new 'nervous system'. Both the technology he created – especially the principles behind the technology (the mouse and the chorded keyset, and especially the Open Hyperdocument System and all the rest) AND the higher-level ideas such as the DKR, the ABC levels, the NIC etc.).

Bootstrapping

<p>If we may re-issue Doug's call to action, what would it be?

Doug was very clear about that. He called it "bootstrapping". There's just about one way to break the spell of the paradox – and that is to BEGIN self-organization, in a way that can scale.

It was clear to Doug that this was the key...


The future has already arrived!

Less than two weeks after Douglas Engelbart passed away – on July 2, 2013 – his dream was coming true in an academic community. AND the place could not be more potentially impactful than it was! As the President of the ISSS, on the yearly conference of this largest organization of systems scientists, which was taking place in Haiphong, Vietnam, Alexander Laszlo initiated a self-organization toward collective intelligence.

He really had two pivotal ideas. One was to make the community intelligent. The other one was to make an intelligent system for coordinating change initiatives around the globe. (An extension of).

Alexander was practically born into this way of thinking and working. His father...

We came here to build a bridge

We came to Haiphong with the story about Jantsch and Engelbart; and with the proposal "We are here to build a bridge"...

And indeed – the bridge has been built! The two initiatives have federated their activities most beautifully!

Prototypes include LaSI SIG & PHD program, the SIL... And The Lighthouse project, among others.

The meaning of The Lighthouse (although it belongs really to prototypes, and to Applications): It breaks the spell of the Wiener's paradox. It creates a lighthouse, for the systems community, to attract stray ships to their harbor. It employs strategic - political thinking, systemic self-organization in a research community, and contemporary communication design, to create impactful messages about a single issue, and placing them into the orbit: CAN WE TRUST "THE MARKET"? or do we need systemic understanding and innovation and design?

Our portfolio of prototypes

When these and other obvious questions are asked and reflected a bit upon, when we understand just how neglected these things are, how misfunctional or dysfunctional they have become, the possibility of a next-generation industrial revolution (of a revolutionary improvement in the effectiveness and efficiency of our work) through innovation becomes transparent. In the last century we invented the airplane, the refrigerator, the washing machine... In this century the inventions that most influence our lives will be on the much larger socio-technical level. Seeing this, one must become curious, and vitally interested, to see what next-generation inventions might be like? If we allow ourselves to recreate scientific collaboration and communication, journalism – and most importantly how those two interact and collaborate with one another... And then of course education, and our other institutions. Those questions are, as you might recall, taken up in Federation through Applications. Our most interesting question

The following question might indeed be now the most interesting one (when the above is properly ingested and digested): How is it possible that Engelbart and Jantsch and Wiener and all the others were not heard and understood until today? And regardless of our giants, and even more interestingly – what has hindered us from taking up systemic innovation all this time? We offer a prototype answer inFederation through Conversations, in connection with The Paradigm Strategy poster. This is where the further techniques, that build on the vignette, are applied and shown. Most importantly, however, we weave together the insight of sociologists, cognitive scientists, anthropologists, historians... to understand how we got here; and what it is that we need to do to go further. MOST interesting indeed – but let's look at it there.

Our evangelizing prototypes for systemic innovation.

The emerging societal paradigm is often seen as a result of some specific change, for example to "the spiritual outlook on life", or to "systemic thinking". A down-on-earth, life-changing insight can, however, more easily be reached by observing the stupendous inadequacy of our various institutions and other systems, and understanding it as a consequence of our present values and way of looking at the world. The "evangelizing prototypes" are real-life histories and sometimes fictional stories, whose purpose is to bring this large insight or gestalt across. They point to uncommonly large possibilities for improving our condition by improving the systems. Our evangelizing prototypes for knowledge federation.

The wastefulness and mis-evolution of our financial system is of course notorious. Yet perhaps even more spectacular examples of mis-evolution, and far more readily accessible possibilities for contribution through improvement, may be found in our own system – knowledge-work in general, and academic research, communication and education in particular. (One might say that the bankers are doing a good job making money for the people who have money...) That is what these evangelizing prototypes for knowledge federation are intended to show. On several occasions we began by asking the audience to imagine meeting a fairy and being approached by (the academic variant of) the usual question "Make a wish – for the largest contribution to human knowledge you may be able to imagine!" What would you wish for? We then asked the audience to think about the global knowledge work as a mechanism or algorithm; and to imagine what sort of contribution to knowledge a significant improvement to this algorithm would be. We then re-told the story about the post-war sociology, as told by Pierre Bourdieu, to show that even enormously large, orders-of-magnitude improvements are possible! Hear the beginning of our 2009 evangelizing talk at the Trinity College, Dublin, or read (a milder version) at the beginning of this article.

Knowledge Work Has a Flat Tire is a springboard story we told was the beginning of one of our two 2011 Knowledge Federation introductory talks to Stanford University, Silicon Valley and the world of innovation (see the blog post Knowledge Federation – an Enabler of Systemic Innovation, and the article linked therein). Eight Vignettes to Evangelize a Paradigm is a collection of such stories.

A profounder view of the two societal paradigms

When the above stories are heard and digested, not only the story of Engelbart must seem incredible, but really the entire big thing: How can it be possible that we the people have ignored insights whose importance literally cannot be overstated? What is really going on? Perhaps there is something we need to understand about ourselves, something very basic, that we haven't seen before? It turns out – and isn't this what the large paradigm changes really are about – that the substance of the matter will be in an entirely different perception of the human condition, with entirely new issues... That is what The Paradigm Strategy poster aims to model, as one of our prototypes. Here is where the vignette are woven together into all those higher-level constructs: threads, patterns, and ultimately to a gestalt, showing what is to be done. The giants here are mostly from the humanities, linguistics, cognitive science – Bauman, Bourdieu, Chomsky, Damasio, Nietzsche... Douglas Engelbart's Unfinished Revolution

Bring to mind again the image of Galilei in house prison... It is most fascinating to observe how even most useful and natural ideas, when they challenge the prevailing paradigm, are ignored or resisted by even the best among us. The Google doc Completing Engelbart's Unfinished Revolution, is our recent proposal to some of the leaders of Stanford University and Google (who knew us and about us from before). Part of the story is about how Doug Engelbart's larger-than-life message, and "call to action" were outright ignored at the presentation of Doug at Google in 2007. And if you can read it between the lines, you'll in it yet another interesting story – showing the inability of the current leaders to allocate the time and attention needed for understanding the emerging paradigm; and pointing to a large opportunity for new, more courageous and more visionary leaders to take the lead.
